Nestled in the heart of the forest, at the foot of the Italian Alps, lies an ancient Gallic olive grove cultivated according to permaculture principles. The Gauls of northern Italy were known as the 'Taurini', which gave its name to Turin, the former capital of Italy. In the Middle Ages, the Kingdom of Cozii gave its name to the Cottian Alps, the mountains situated between Turin and Briançon. Few people know this, but Piedmont was the primary olive oil supplier to Italy until the 17th century. Today, with shifting climate patterns, olive farming has resumed after being interrupted by the Little Ice Age. Apart from Orange the rooster and his hens, you will have the olive grove to yourself—shared only with my chickens—just a few hundred meters from the Tre Denti - Freidour Natural Park and at the crossroads of several mountain bike trails of varying difficulty. The reserve is also a fantastic climbing spot, recognized and maintained by the Alpine Club. You will be warmly welcomed into a project rooted in permaculture values. When it comes to energy and resource management, electricity is generated by solar panels, the toilet is a compost toilet, and the water is remineralized, filtered rainwater safe for drinking. Greywater is phyto-filtered. Wherever possible, everything adheres to low-tech, sustainable principles.

The kitchen is sheltered under a roof and equipped with a “putagé” (a traditional Piedmontese wood-burning stove), a table, and benches. Lighting is provided by oil lamps. In line with permaculture principles, greywater is not discarded but recycled and phytopurified. The facilities include composting toilets. There is very little mobile phone reception (a great opportunity to disconnect?). Wood is a precious resource to be used sparingly. Water, the most precious resource of all, MUST be used with great care, as only rainwater is available.

Rules

The olive grove is fully fenced, so your dog can roam off-leash under certain conditions.

Regarding your dog, the house rule is simple: they must be well-behaved and must NOT attack other animals.

Firewood is a very precious resource. You are welcome to enjoy a campfire, but please do so with care and in moderation.

Regarding (open) campfires: this naturally involves obvious risks. In some cases, they may be prohibited by local authorities (drought) or directly by your host, depending on the dry conditions. You may also be asked to demonstrate your ability to safely build a campfire.

Water is a form of “energy” that is just as precious. In the olive grove, rainwater is collected, so this resource is carefully managed—something we will gladly explain to you.

If you are lucky and visit at the right time of year, you'll have the chance to admire fireflies. They use their glowing signals to mate, so excessive artificial light directly impacts their living and breeding conditions. Please be mindful of them and try not to use your flashlights too often. In addition, the meadow is their home, and trampling the grass destroys their habitat as well as that of all the other insects.

Notes

You will be the only guests. I stop by almost every day to tend to my field, so we will often be sharing the space.

In the morning, no need for an alarm clock! Orange will take care of it... and he's an early riser.

The village of Cumiana, with everything you could possibly need, is just a 10-minute drive away. You'll also find several restaurants there. A market takes place on the main square, under the covered market hall, on Wednesdays and Fridays.

The olive grove is nestled in the heart of the forest and faces south. The church bell chimes the hours. We are located just 300 meters from a nature reserve, and a mountain bike trail passes less than 50 meters away. A few hundred meters further, climbers can put their skills to the test. Lake Avigliana is easily accessible by car. There are countless opportunities for sporting, educational, historical, and cultural outings, and Turin is just 20 km away.

I hold a diploma in permaculture and am also certified to teach it. If you wish, we can chat about it during your stay. I can also help you organize excursions. There are lakes, via ferratas, and numerous hiking trails in the surrounding area, which I'd be happy to show you if you'd like. Foraging, meaning the harvesting and consumption of wild edible plants (upon request). Use of low-tech solutions, adapted to requests and real needs (for example, manual haymaking, raising chickens, etc.). General info: We are situated at an altitude of 500 m at the foot of the Alps (Piedmont). The region rises very steeply to the west (3,000 m and above), while to the east, we immediately reach the plains. We are therefore right at the edge between the mountains and the plain. In permaculture, edge zones are regarded as areas of extreme fertility—and the wide variety of possible activities certainly proves it!
