People often use the romantic phrase 'at one with nature'... but few realize that this doesn't just mean harmony; it is also closely linked to effort, discomfort, and testing one's own limits. Those who have the courage to face these challenges and embrace a 'journey to oneself in the wild' will surely return from this getaway feeling enriched and fulfilled. Villa Machita is located in a small clearing (860 m above sea level) within a chestnut forest, slightly off the beaten path on the northern part of Lake Como. It can only be reached on foot via a hiking trail (approx. 30 minutes, 260 meters of elevation gain). A neighboring cabin is used occasionally for a few nights... but most of the time, you will likely be up there alone with the inhabitants of the forest. Civilization is about a 20-minute walk away. A further 3.5 km, which can be driven by car over an unpaved road, leads to the nearest mountain village. Anyone booking the 'Villa Machita' mountain hut must be able to find it using a hiking map and/or apps like Komoot. The directions and photos I provide are for support only. Sure-footedness is essential, and based on our experience, hiking boots are required.

Villa Machita was lovingly restored by us with a simple vision in mind: For the floors and furniture, we used chestnut wood from the surrounding forest, along with reclaimed boards and split logs. No electricity… instead, candlelight No fitted kitchen… instead, cooking over an open fire No toilet… instead, the forest (with a dry toilet coming soon) No bathroom… instead, a stone trough with fresh mountain water right outside No frills… instead, pure passion The space features an open hearth, a handcrafted double bed with two very comfortable folding mattresses, a handmade table and benches, an Italian Moka pot, pots, pans, and dishes. We also provide basic essentials like salt, sugar, dish soap, vinegar, and oil for your convenience. For cooling food, you can use the cellar beneath the house or the running water at the trough. Villa Machita has no heating and is therefore best enjoyed during the warm summer months.

You are more than welcome to collect firewood—in fact, we encourage it! Just please ensure no wet wood is brought inside, as it can cause mold.

Fires are only permitted inside the cabin in the designated fireplace. Unfortunately, outdoor campfires are not allowed.

A cozy trattoria (which also has parking) is located downhill, about a 15 to 20-minute walk away. In the next village (approx. 3.5 km), reachable by car, you'll find a small grocery store for your essentials. Just another 8 km brings you down to Lake Como, offering numerous supermarkets, bakeries, cafes, and more...

As mentioned, Villa Machita is nestled in a small clearing amidst an ancient chestnut forest. In front of the cottage, water gently splashes in the fountain trough. The neighbor is rarely on site, so you'll likely spend most of your time alone with the enchanting inhabitants of the forest. The accompanying photos probably speak louder than my description.

For hiking enthusiasts, there are countless beautiful destinations to explore: from natural pools in the valley and mountains, to wild rivers, and even mountain lakes where you can spend the night in a bivouac. You can also embark on a hut-to-hut tour, staying overnight in various charming mountain huts (including, for example, Villa Misterella, which I also offer as a camp here).

Villa Machita is a special place, surrounded by chestnut trees and off the beaten path; you feel like you're far away and in another time. We encountered very few people on our hikes—the complete opposite of the Allgäu. And if you feel like a bit of civilization, you can walk down to Crotta Dangri for a coffee. When it rains, you can make yourself cozy in the villa by candlelight.
